Excursion to Assisi and Spello - Full Day Tour From Perugia 

Your private driver will meet you at your accommodation and you’ll comfortably reach the town of Assisi where the patron saint of Italy, Saint Francis of Assisi (1181- 1226) lived, worked and died. On a lowland at the foot of Mount Subasio, the hill on which Assisi rises, you’ll first visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built around as a protection of the famous little church of the "Porziuncola", where Saint Francis acknowledged his vocation and founded the Order of the Minor Friars. Then, you’ll reach the centre of Assisi, where you will meet up with an expert local guide who will accompany you on an exciting visit to the civil and religious artistic heritage of the city. Admire the splendid Gothic Basilica dedicated to Saint Chiara (1257), made in pink and white bands, the Renaissance Chiesa Nuova with the elegant Dome and the Roman temple of Minerva, of which the first century façade remains. Discover the fourteenth century Monte Frumentario and finally visit the famous and beautiful St Francis’ Basilica, a UNESCO heritage monument, built with white-rosy stone coming from Mount Subasio. The wonderful frescoed cycles by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Lorenzetti are preserved inside the Basilica. Free time for lunch. In the early afternoon you’ll move onto Spello, one of the most beautiful villages of Italy, located on the spur of Mount Subasio, dating back to the Roman period, of which you can still admire the ruins of the theater and the amphitheater and the splendid town gates: Porta Consolare, Porta Urbica and Porta Venere. Spend your time to explore on your own, the main churches of the town: Santa Maria Maggiore, famous for the presence of some Perugino works and the Pinturicchio’s cycle of frescoes and paintings inside the Cappella Bella and St Andrew’s Church. Enjoy your time also exploring the enchanting narrow streets and the many shops and ateliers showing renowned contemporary masters’ works of art! Spello is also famous for the oil-olive production called “Spello’s green gold”. On the way back to Perugia, the driver will be glad to take you in a ancient olive oil mill, where you can have a tasting of the olive oil produced and experience the real Umbrian life!
