The Godfather Tour: Savoca, Forza d’Agro
The godfather movies tour, Forza d’Agro, Bar vitelli, Savoca
Meet your “mafia” guide and travel to the antique villages of Savoca and Forza d’Agro to see the places where the famous scenes of Godfather movies were done. Tour the towns where Francis Ford Coppola and Al Pacino shot scenes for The Godfather II and The Godfather III. Though many scenes were filmed in New York and California, Coppola also brought the beauty of Sicily’s undisturbed mountaintop towns Savoca and Forza d’Agrò to Hollywood. You can tour these locations during one of the most scenic drives you’ll ever experience.
A scenic drive runs inland to Savoca which is considered one of the most attractive places in the environ of Taormina. Bar Vitelli with a gorgeous terrace, has a collection of photographs taken when Francis Ford Coppola shot some scenes of “The Godfather II”. Free time for a “granita” in the Bar Vitelli then we walk to the Chiesa Madre with its fine 16C portal surmonted by a beautifully carved oculus and the coat of arms of Savoca, bearing the eldeberry branch from which the name of the town is supposed to derive.
We will there enjoy a granita tasting at the local famous bar Vitelli. The tour will continue to Forza d’Agrò an attractive medieval hamlet caps the furthermost spurs of the Monti Peloritani with a splendid view of the coast. In 1990, Al Pacino and Sophia Coppola shot some scenes of the film “The Godfather III In recent years this town has seen a great deal of building - apartment blocks, hotels, luxury homes - hardly surprising when you take into account the views and the proximity to Taormina. But if you walk on uphill, you will discover that the ancient hill-top town is still as it has been since the middle ages - a warren of narrow streets and tiny houses leading up to the ruined castle. The town found brief fame in Godfather II - after the assassination of his brother (in the the opening scene in the film shot in the dry river-bed below the town), his only surviving male relative young Vito Corleone cowers in the dark near the church below, as his pursuers shout out his name. Michael Corleone visits his father's "birthplace" with his daughter in Godfather III. The fictional Corleone is a composite of Forza d' Agrò and nearby Savoca. The real Corleone can also be on our itinerary - it bears no resemblance to this peaceful town in the sky with its panoramic views over the Mediterranean sea.
